What is a geo-grid, and why one rank number is misleading
Your Google Maps rank changes every few hundred metres. A geo-grid shows the full picture.
Ask "what rank are we on Google Maps?" and you'll get a different answer depending on where you stand. That's because proximity to the searcher is one of the strongest local ranking factors.
How a geo-grid works
A geo-grid places a grid of points — say 7×7 — around your business and checks your Maps rank for a keyword from each point. The result is a map of where you're visible and where you're not.
How to read it
- Green (1–3): you appear in the Map Pack here.
- Amber (4–10): close — small improvements can move you up.
- Red (11–20+): customers here will rarely find you.
What to do with it
Look for patterns. If you're strong to the north but weak to the east, check which competitors win there and compare reviews, categories and photos. Then re-scan monthly to see what changed.
