How to choose the right primary category on Google Business Profile
Your primary category is the strongest ranking signal you fully control. Here is how to pick it without guessing.
Industry surveys of local SEO experts consistently rank the primary Google Business Profile category as the single most important factor for appearing in the Map Pack. The good news: it costs nothing to get right.
1. Be specific, not broad
Google recommends choosing the category that best describes your business as a whole — and as specific as possible. "Dental clinic" beats "Doctor". "South Indian restaurant" beats "Restaurant" if that's what you are.
2. Look at who already ranks
Search your main service in your area and open the top three results on Maps. Note their primary category. If all of them use a category you don't, that's a strong signal.
3. Use secondary categories for real services only
- Add secondary categories for services you genuinely offer.
- Don't add categories just to rank for keywords — that can hurt relevance and trust.
4. Re-check after changes
Category changes can shift rankings within days. Run a geo-grid scan before and after so you can see the effect clearly.
